Sculpture
Sculptures My sculptures are a celebration of nature’s intricate beauty, meticulously crafted using a combination of materials that bring my vision to life. One of the primary materials | work with is woven aluminium, which | manipulate by hand to simulate the texture and appearance of fabric trim. This technique allows me to juxtapose the industrial strength of metal with the delicate, flowing forms found in nature, creating a striking visual effect. The subjects of my sculptures are often inspired by flora, focusing on plants that once existed or no longer thrive today. These extinct or endangered species are a testament to the fragile balance of our natural environment.
To enhance the sense of preciousness and reverence, I frequently enclose these sculpted plants in protective cages, reminiscent of the way saintly relics are safeguarded in churches. These cages not only protect the sculptures but also serve as a metaphor for the need to preserve and protect what remains of our natural world. The act of caging these forms is a reflection on both the sanctity and vulnerability of nature, echoing a deep respect and an urgent call for conservation. In addition to the woven aluminium, I incorporate magnificent olive roots collected from the Adelaide Hills into my sculptures. These roots, with their contorted, organic shapes, provide a natural foundation that complements the man-made elements of my work. Their twisting forms and rich textures embody the resilience and beauty of nature, acting as a bridge between the past and present. By integrating these olive roots, I connect the ancient wisdom and enduring spirit of the land with contemporary artistic expression. Each sculpture becomes a dialogue between the natural and the crafted, inviting viewers to reflect on the complex relationship between humanity and the environment.
